The Quiz: Discrete Discoveries
We admire so many talents far and wide that we thought it would be fun to just send out the same questions to everyone we liked and write an article around their responses. Sort of a social-scene-o-logical profile across our world of talent. So we bring you: The Quiz! These questions may be modified over time, but we’ll begin our test with Discrete Discoveries, maker of the sweetest hand-crafted plugs and jewelry this side of the MySpace / Facebook divide! Their hand-etched and engraved acrylics take the form of the most awesome icons and finely-crafted designs any true rocker would rock. It’s like high-class plastic art-wear for anywhere with an occasional black light.
So here’s their test results, with some evidence shots:
NoGoodz: Everyone has an elevator pitch to describe what their work is all about. What’s yours? What’s your 1 minute, canned speech? 200 characters or less.
Sarah at Discrete Discoveries: Caleb and I always have a short and sweet answer to that; we say, “We run our own jewelry business called Discrete Discoveries, that makes affordable custom plugs, necklaces, and pretty much whatever you can think of .” [219 chrs.]
What’s the last thing that you did that you know you killed it and it came out perfect?
Well, we both had two different opinions on which product we like the best. I am in love with one of our new pieces, set to come out in late November 2008. It is a Mom/Dad heart necklace that plays off of traditional american tattoo designs. Caleb has always loved a pair of plugs we made when we first started the business. It is a pair of clear acrylic plugs with the aum symbol surrounded by an extremely intricate design. It is more of a love/hate than anything though, because they take about 5 hours to engrave.
What’s the worst piece of advice that someone’s given you about art?
People think that you have to have this natural talent for it; you are either born with it or you aren’t, but that’s not really true. If you love something that much you will put the time into it to become good.
Are you a looking to starve for your art or get fat on your creativity?
I think that as long as you are making art, it doesn’t matter whether or not you are making money from it. If you are successful from it, then that is just an added bonus.
If your art had a Facebook page, what would be it’s status right now?
Discrete Discoveries is eating french fried Po Boys!
List your top 3 inspirational things as of late?
Other artists, each other, and our friends.
What’s coming up from you?
We have a new collection of necklaces and earrings coming out soon, with a total of 22 new designs. We also are going to be recruiting more people to our street team!
